How this calculator works
Total project fee = (estimated hours × hourly rate) + complexity buffer + revision costs. Complexity buffer adds 15%–30% for unknown complexity.
Useful scenarios
- A freelance web developer pricing a 40-hour website build at $100/hour with a 20% complexity buffer and 5 revision hours included.
- A UX designer quoting a product design sprint with 60 estimated hours at $120/hour plus a 25% buffer for scope changes.
- A copywriter pricing a content package with 10 hours of writing, $85/hour, and 2 hours of revisions included.
FAQ
How large should my complexity buffer be?
15%–30% is standard. Use 15% for well-defined projects you've done before, 25%–30% for new types of work or vague scope. Some freelancers use 50% when the brief is deliberately open-ended.
Should I charge for revisions in the project fee?
Include a reasonable number of revision hours (2–10 depending on scope) in the fixed fee. Charge extra after that. This gives clients a clear boundary and encourages focused feedback.
What if the project takes more hours than estimated?
Track actual hours against estimate. If you consistently go over, increase your estimates or complexity buffer. For clients, agree on a scope-of-work document that defines what's included and what triggers a change order.
